What Is ELIP?

What Is a LIP?

A Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) is an initiative designed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to develop a community-based approach to facilitate the integration of newcomers into Canada. LIPs connect government, newcomer-serving organizations, and community groups (such as faith communities, schools, cultural societies, and social and recreational groups) in order to share ideas and practical approaches to addressing needs specific to their community.

There are more than 90 LIPs across the country, forming a national network that assists communities with:

  • integrating newcomer needs and goals into the community planning process;
  • identifying community-specific strategic priorities;
  • implementing a settlement strategy and action plans to improve newcomer outcomes.

The Edmonton Local Immigration Partnership

ELIP forges partnerships across immigrant-serving organizations, government, and communities to address the unique, diverse needs of newcomers. Partners learn and create together in order to meet the needs of the people ELIP serves, with made-in-Edmonton solutions developed through coordination across agencies and communities.

Our Values

Working Together

We believe that our differences become our strengths when we meet challenges together, learn from each other, and co-create paths forward.

Centering People

Because belonging means different things to different people, the needs, strengths, and aspirations of individuals and communities must drive action.

Pursuing Equity

Acknowledging and understanding the complexities of intersectionality helps us pursue equity in the face of power differentials and the status quo.

Our Mission

ELIP brings communities, organisations and individuals together to learn about the unique needs of newcomers.

We respect the cultural wealth of diverse communities, and celebrate the resilience, skills, and knowledge that newcomers bring to the city.

We guide partnerships in co-creating new, community-based solutions, to craft paths to belonging.

We work to help transform newcomers’ aspirations and dreams into an abundant future for them and their families, in a city they can truly call home.
