ELIP Launches Edmonton Guide to Support Inclusive Employment and Newcomer Success

ELIP ERG Teaser Post (May 2) English

The Edmonton Local Immigration Partnership (ELIP) is proud to announce the official launch of the Employment Resource Guide, a collaborative initiative developed by ELIP’s Employment Action Table (EAT). The guide addresses employment barriers faced by newcomers and provides practical, community-informed tools to help build a more equitable workforce in Edmonton.

The Employment Resource Guide is the first of its kind in the city and is designed for service providers, employers, community organizations, newcomers, and government partners seeking to create inclusive employment systems. This resource highlights the importance of local collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and systems-level change to support economic inclusion.

What’s in the guide

The Employment Resource Guide is divided into four key sections, each tailored to different needs within the employment ecosystem:

  1. Professions and Career Pathways
Offers information on credential recognition, regulated professions, and navigating employment pathways based on training and experience.
  2. Volunteer Opportunities and Workplace Culture
Highlights how volunteerism supports job readiness and offers tools to foster cultural inclusion in the workplace.
  3. Entrepreneurship Opportunities
Provides insight into starting a business, accessing supports and funding, and navigating relevant policies and services.
  4. Employer Resources
Includes practical tools, policy suggestions, and examples of promising practices for equitable hiring, onboarding, and employee retention.

Each section reflects the real-life experiences of Edmonton’s diverse communities and was developed through consultation with EAT members and local stakeholders.

Who the guide is for

This guide is intended to support:

  • Service providers working in immigrant employment and settlement
  • Employers and industry partners aiming to diversify and retain talent
  • Newcomer-serving agencies and community organizations
  • Municipal, provincial, and federal government partners
  • The general public interested in inclusive hiring practices

Available in both English and French

To ensure accessibility, the guide is available in both English and French. ELIP collaborated with Francophonie Albertaine Plurielle (FRAP) and the Employment Action Table to develop translated content that reaches both anglophone and francophone audiences in Edmonton.

A collective effort

This resource was developed with the combined efforts of the Employment Action Table, whose members contributed their time, insights, and expertise. ELIP extends its sincere thanks to the organizations, community partners, and individuals who helped shape the content of this guide.

We also acknowledge the support of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), whose funding and partnership continue to enable community-based solutions that improve newcomer integration.
